Say no to GMOs in Aotearoa!

It's our last chance to stop the Gene Technology Bill from being passed into law. The best way we can work together is by each telling our local MP that we oppose GMOs in Aotearoa!

Aotearoa could become a seed ark for the rest of the world

But not if the Gene Technology Bill is passed into law. The Health Select Committee has published its final report on the policy and we have until the end of 2025 to tell our local MPs clearly that we Say No To Biopiracy In Aotearoa!

Papawhakaritorito Trust co-founder Dr Jessica Hutchings says the report’s recommendations point to the fact that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) may soon be released into our environment.

To protect te Taiao, Indigenous species and tino rangitiratanga, we must tell our politicians that We Say No To GMOs!

“GE impacts on the mauri, mana and whakapapa of an organism. When we tamper with nature in this way, we lose control and we open the floodgates for GMO seeds to be imported.”

Why we do it

For over 20 years, our founding trustees Dr Jessica Hutchings (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Huirapa, Gujarati) and Associate Professor Jo Smith (Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe, Kāi Tahu) have been hua parakore (Māori organics) farmers and researchers. In 2021, they decided to take their practical experience from the whenua and weave it together with their story telling, education and research kaupapa to create Papawhakaritorito Trust.
